1.1 Background of the Study
Local legends play an important role in preserving the cultural heritage and history of communities, serving as vehicles for storytelling, moral lessons, and the collective memory of a people. In Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State, these legends are deeply embedded in the cultural fabric, often passed down through generations via oral traditions. However, with the increasing pace of modernization, many local legends risk being forgotten or misrepresented. Photography offers a powerful way to document and represent these legends, capturing the essence of local myths, historical figures, and cultural practices in visually compelling ways. By using photography to represent local legends, the community can preserve and celebrate its heritage for future generations. This study explores the role of photography in representing local legends in Kanam, examining how visual storytelling can contribute to the preservation of cultural identity.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of local legends in shaping the identity of communities, there is a growing risk that these stories will be lost due to the erosion of traditional cultures and the influence of globalization. In Kanam, many of these legends are known only to a few elderly community members, and their representation is often limited to oral accounts. Photography, as a medium, has the potential to preserve these legends in a more lasting and tangible form. This study seeks to explore how photography can be used to document and represent local legends in Kanam Local Government Area, ensuring that the cultural stories of the community are not forgotten.
